Sleepers are small invulnerable ghosts that stay stationary. Once Isaac attacks them or draws too close, the Sleeper will transform, revealing their terrifying true form.
In this state, they will slowly float after Isaac while covering the entire screen in a pitch-black static effect, leaving only two circles of visibility around itself and Isaac.
If the Sleeper makes contact with Isaac, it will deal a full Heart of damage and disappear, removing the darkness. It will also disappear once the room is cleared.
Trivia
- Sleeper makes a cameo as one of the enemies in the itch.io game Ghost Hunt 64x, made by minichibis before the release of Fiend Folio: Reheated.
- Sleeper's scream sound effect when they are awakened is sampled from the "femur breaker" in the game SCP - Containment Breach.
- In the code, there is a secret subtype of Sleeper that can only be spawned through using the debug console. It both appears and behaves near identically to a regular Sleeper, but when it gives chase, dark pointed shadows will appear around Isaac in different directions that will periodically lunge at him, dealing damage if they make contact. The Sleeper itself would also no longer disappear after making contact with Isaac.
- This variant was originally meant to be a concept for a "tainted" Sleeper that would be found in the
Ascent. However, it was ultimately unused due to the shadows being difficult to see on darker backdrops, and because the developers felt Sleeper was better left as a one-off variety of enemy.
