Gorgoneion is a passive item added in The Reheated Update.
Effects
- Spawns a sleeping Gorgoneion familiar that remains stationary in the center of the room.
- If there are any obstacles in the center of the room in the way, Gorgoneion will occupy whatever free space closest to the available center.
- If there are enemies, the Gorgoneion will wake up and stare at enemies to petrify them.
- The familiar will attempt to choose the enemy closest to Gorgoneion first, and will switch to a new target every 2 seconds, or once their current target is killed.
- Gorgoneion will ignore any obstacles in the way when selecting targets.
Notes
- Gorgoneion will only petrify on target at a time, regardless of if there appears to be multiple enemies in its line of sight.
- Targets will be petrified for a short while longer after the Gorgoneion is no longer starting at them, with the remaining duration influenced by how long they've been stared at.
- If there is no other available target to switch to after staring at their previous target long enough, Gorgoneion will stare at Isaac without doing anything.
- Bosses and mini-bosses can be targeted by the Gorgoneion, but the petrification will last for only half as long, and will not be able to petrify them again for 7 seconds after due to the boss's status effect immunity.
- Gorgoneion will not attempt to petrify invulnerable enemies.
- Gorgoneion can be charmed by the The Siren, where it will stare at Isaac and slow their movement speed down.
Interactions
- BFFS!: BFFS! and other familiar modifiers will have no effect on Gorgoneion.
- Abyss: Absorbing Gorgoneion spawns a grey Abyss Locust that deals 10% of Isaac's damage and petrifies enemies they hit for 2 seconds.
- Second Hand: Doubles the duration of Gorgoneion's petrification on enemies.

Trivia
- Despite sharing a name, Gorgoneion is not based directly on the actual Gorgoneion, but rather on the Gorgons themselves, a kind of humanoid monsters in Greek mythos that had snakes for hair and would turn those who gazed at them into stone.
