Empty Book

Empty Book is an active item added in The Reheated Update.

Effects

  • Upon use, Empty Book opens a dialog box which reads "Empty Book: I want to read a(n) <1st choice> <2nd choice> with a <3rd choice> twist! Write!"
    • The player can choose one of three available options for each choice.
    • Selecting "Write!" will confirm the player's choices and give them a new active item, called My Story.
  • My Story has various effects depending on the options selected by the player.
    • 1st choice determines the amount of charges My Story has:
      • short story: 2 pips
      • average story: 4 pips
      • long story: 6 pips
    • 2nd and 3rd choices determines the effects My Story produces when used. The chosen length of the story also increases the strength of those effects:
      • that's profitable or profitable: Spawns 2 Pennies at "short" length. Upgrades to having 1 of the Pennies being a random Coin for "average" length, and adds a random pickup for "long" length.
      • that makes me sad or sad: Grants a +0.25 Tears up for the room at "short" length. Upgraded to +0.5 Tears up for "average" length, or +0.75 for "long" length.
      • that's frightening or frightening: Inflicts fear for 7 seconds to enemies in a short range at "short" length. Upgraded to inflicting all enemies in the room with Fear for 5 seconds for "average" length, or inflicting all enemies with Fear for 8 seconds for "long" length.
      • about love or loving: Spawns a Half Red Heart at "short" length. Upgraded to a full Red Heart for "average", length or a Soul Heart for "long" length.
      • that's religious or religious: Spawns a default Book of Virtues.png Book of Virtues wisp at "short" length. Upgraded to 2 for "average" length, or 3 for "long" length.
      • that's shocking or shocking: Inflicts one stack of bruising for 7 seconds to enemies in range, with them taking additional damage equal to 50% of Isaac's Damage at "short" length. Upgraded to inflicting all enemies in the room with 2 stacks of Bruising for 5 seconds that take +200% Isaac's Damage for "average" length, and 3 stacks of Bruising for 8 seconds that take +450% Isaac's Damage for "long" length.
      • about festering or festering: Spawns 2 Blue Skuzz.png Blue Skuzzes at "short" length. Upgraded to 4 for "average" length, or 6 for "long" length.
      • full of jokes or funny: Isaac creates a Butter Bean.png Butter Bean fart at "short" length. Upgraded to a poison fart for "average" length, or 4 giant poison farts around Isaac for "long" length.
      • that's violent or violent: Hurts enemies within a short range for 15 + Stage × 3 damage at "short" length. Upgraded all enemies in the room hurt for 20 + Stage × 3 damage for "average" length, or 30 + Stage × 4 damage for "long" length.
      • full of mischief or mischievous: Spawns 1 HollowFriends.png Evil Hollow Minion at "short" length. Upgraded to 2 Minions for "average" length, or 3 for "long" length.
      • that's totally wild or wild: Randomly does one of the previously cited effects.

Notes

  • The random pickup spawned by the "long" + "profitable" effect has a small chance of being an item.
  • The increased damage enemies inflicted with bruising through "shocking" effect is unique as it scales with the Player's damage, rather than giving a +1 flat damage bonus.
  • The 3 different forms of charge time for My Story are, in actuality, 3 separate items listed in the code, all with the same name and description.
  • If My Story is somehow obtained without using Empty Book first to set the effects, both of its effects will be "wild" with the "average" length effect by default.
  • Empty Book contributes to the Bookworm transformation. This transformation progress stays when Empty Book is turned into My Story.
    • If My Story is somehow obtained first, it will not contribute to Bookworm, because of technical reasons.
