Devil's Abacus is a passive item added in The Reheated Update.

Effects

• Counting with the number of tears Isaac shoots in succession grants an increasing flat damage and tears up, indicated by a counter increasing above Isaac's head.
  • Counting is done by firing 1 more tear than previously in numerical order and stopping. (ex: 1 tear, 2 tears, 3 tears, etc.)
  • Stat boosts will revert back to 0 if the chain is broken.

Notes

• Both the damage and tear rate boost granted by counting with Devil's Abacus are equal to log(1 + Count ÷ 3).
• Item effects that replace Isaac's tears, such as Brimstone and Mom's Knife, will not be able to increment the counter with Devil's Abacus.
  • However, this means that if Isaac reaches a certain number by counting with normal tears before gaining these item effects, the stat boosts will still remain when Isaac attacks with these items.

Interactions

• Chocolate Milk: Isaac will not be able to count higher than 1 with his tears, as the charged tears require releasing the shoot button to release them, which will interrupt the count.

Trivia

• Devil's Abacus' effect and flavor text are a reference to the counting channels in the Fiend Folio Cornmunity Discord server.
• The item's costume is a reference to the "nerd" emoji found on most social media platforms, historically used to parody people on the internet who condescendingly try to correct information or otherwise promote counterarguments and opinions by backing them with "scientific fact" in comment threads.
  • Likewise, the item's name could likely be a pun on the phrase "Devil's advocate".
