Max's Fossil is a rock trinket added in The Reheated Update.

Effects

• When entering a room connected to an undiscovered Secret Room or Super Secret Room, a dog's howl can be heard.
• Crush Effect: The next Tinted Rock or Super Special Rock encountered will be revealed, with a howl and an image of a dog that appears above the rock before quickly fading away.

Notes

• Crushing multiple copies of Max's Fossil will queue for revealing additional Tinted Rocks that Golem encounters, equal to the total number of crushed Max's Fossils.

Interactions

• Trinket Multipliers: No effect.
• Azurite Spindown: Using Azurite Spindown on Max's Fossil rerolls it into Trippy Fossil.

Trivia

• Max's Fossil is based on the item "Max's Head" from the original The Binding of Isaac, before it was changed to Cricket's Head in Rebirth.
• The flavor text for Max's Fossil reading as "Dog howell"^(sic) may be a riff on how the internal file name of the howl sound effect used by Dog Tooth, which is titled "SOUND_DOG_HOWELL".
• There are currently over 312 possible images of dogs (or things somewhat related to dogs) that can appear from Max's Fossil, many of them originating from memes and pop culture.
