Basco is a boss added in The Reheated Update that can appear in the WombIcon.png Womb.

Behavior

Normal Form (Phase 1)

Basco moves around the room erratically with short, quick slides, and can perform the following attacks:

  • Launches 2 Spicy Dip.png Spicy Dips quickly towards random points at the edge of the room if there are none currently present.
  • Curls into a ball and rolls towards Isaac, gaining momentum and making wide turns.
    • Basco will kill any Spicy Dips and destroy any rocks he runs into while rolling.
  • Hops in place, releasing a large pool of pale red creep while sending out 4 small projectiles in the cardinal directions, 4 large long-lasting projectiles in the ordinal directions that bounce off of walls, and causing 3 pieces of Basco's Food to pop out of the ground at random locations in the room.

Basco will slide quickly towards any nearby Food while Idle, and will attempt to take a bite once close enough. If he consumes a piece of Food, it affects his behavior depending on the "quality" of the Food eaten:

  • Basco, after chewing, spits out 3 arcing Haemolacria.png Haemolacria projectiles towards Isaac that leave behind small pools of pale red damaging creep, and shoot out projectile rings with random orientations.
    • The amount of projectiles in each ring depends on the quality of the Food eaten. Undamaged Food make the projectiles shoot 6 projectiles, which can be reduced down to a minimum of 3 projectiles with "poisonous" Food.
  • Eating Food will Heal Basco, depending on the quality of the Food eaten. Undamaged Food will heal him for upwards of 40 HP, while "poisonous" Food will not heal Basco and will instead poison him for a few seconds.
  • If Basco initiates his roll attack, he will target any remaining Food if he rolls near them. Rolling into a piece of Food will heal or poison him based on its respective quality, as if he ate that Food normally, and cause him to leave behind a trail of harmful creep and extend the duration of his roll. The duration of the creep and the extra time to his roll scales with the Food's quality.

Burning Form (Phase 2)

As Basco's health depletes, some of the 3 pieces of Food that Basco spawns will be replaced with Spicy Food, with 1 Spicy Food appearing once below 500 HP, and 2 when below 250 HP.

If Basco eats or rolls into a Spicy Food, he will stop in place and begin to heat up, releasing a short stream of flames in the ordinal directions as well as 4 lines of fire in the cardinal directions, turning into his "burning" form that lasts for roughly 15 seconds. In this phase, Basco moves and attacks faster, his projectiles travel faster, and his attacks become altered:

  • When spawning Spicy Dips, Basco will instead spawn unique orange variants which have greatly increased movement speed. These orange Spicy Dips also explode on death, leaving behind an extinguishable fire.
  • While rolling, Basco leaves behind a trail of flames that dissipate quickly.
  • When hopping in place, the cardinal projectiles will create a firey explosion when they hit a wall or Isaac, while the bouncing ordinal projectiles will move much faster and create a singular fire wave when they land.

When Basco eats Food while in this form, his resulting attacks have different properties:

  • Eating regular Food while in this phase will still produce the previously cited effects, but the projectiles launched by Basco will create rings of flames when they land, with the amount of flames in each ring being equal to the amount of projectiles.
    • Rolling into regular Food won't grant any additional effects.
  • Eating another Spicy Food while in this phase causes him to gag before spitting an explosive projectile towards Isaac, with the projectile releasing 3 lines of fire in a spread behind it after hitting a wall. Eating a Spicy Food will also add an additional 15 seconds to the duration of his burning phase.
    • Rolling into a Spicy Food will cause him to cancel his roll, before then spitting the projectile.

After a long enough time, if Basco hasn't eaten another Spicy Food while in his burning phase, he will cool down and turn back into his normal form.

Notes

  • When attempting to take a bite, Basco can potentially miss if the Food is knocked out of the way or destroyed before he can eat it, resulting in no effect happening.
  • Basco can eat multiple Food in a single bite if they're grouped together, and will perform both Food's effects in conjunction.
    • Eating both a Spicy Food and a regular Food at once will cause him to perform the Spicy Food attack before the regular Food, as opposed to in conjunction.
  • As Basco can restore his HP by eating regular Food, the amount of Spicy Food spawned when performing his hop will be reduced when his health reaches above the respective thresholds.
  • Basco takes 80% reduced damage when transitioning in and out of his "burning" phase.
  • Basco is immune to damage from Red Poop.png Red Poop, as well as fire and explosions from his own attacks.
  • If Basco dies and the room is cleared while there is still Food left in the room, then all Food will be destroyed.

Spawns

Basco's Food

Basco's Food are various organs in the shape of strawberries, cherries, and drumsticks that can be spawned by Basco. The Food has a significant amount of health and armor, and will degrade in quality depending on how much damage is dealt to them, indicated by the Food gradually turning green. Their quality becomes completely depleted once brought below half of their health, where they will create a tiny fart cloud and become "poisonous".

Basco's Food can be eaten by Basco, of which the subsequent effects after being eaten scaling with how much the Food had been damaged.

Spicy Food

Spicy Food are flaming variants of Basco's Food that can't be damaged or destroyed.

They will not heal Basco when eaten by him and will instead have him transition into his "burning" form, if he wasn't in it already.

Trivia

  • Basco is the boss version of Spicy Dip.png Spicy Dips and Berry.png Berries, being one of many bosses based off of the lineage of poop-themed enemies including Dingle.png Dingle, Brownie.png Brownie and MonsoonIcon.png Monsoon.
  • Basco was unused in the Afterbirth+ edition of the Fiend Folio MOD.
  • In the MOD's files, red animated splash text of the words "Basco Blast!!" can be found in Basco's folder. This was supposed to appear on the screen when Basco would use his now cut "Basco Blast" attack.
    • This text is an entity that can be spawned in through the debug console — the text can be made to appear by entering the following command in the debug console: spawn 1000.1732:FUNNY BLAST
    • There also exists a version of this splash text in Japanese, which would presumably appear in the Japanese localization of Isaac. However, this does not work in game.
    • A sound file of the announcer shouting "Basco Blast!!" would play when the splash text appeared on screen. This has been voiced by Budj, one of the Fiend Folio developers.
