Dusk is a shadowy skeletal boss added in The Reheated Update that can be encountered in MausoleumIcon.png Mausoleum.

Behavior

Phase 1

Dusk starts off the fight with its head in the top center of the room and its hands, connected to the head by skeletal arms, at the sides of the room. Its full size spans the entire length of the room.

  • Attacking the hands and the head deals damage to Dusk. The arms are intangible and can not be attacked, nor can they deal contact damage to Isaac.
  • Both its hands and head attempt to stay lined up with Isaac, with the head following Isaac more loosely than the hands.

Dusk will begin the fight with its head shooting swirly projectiles in one of the following spread patterns:

  • 9 slow projectiles with a very wide spread.
  • 6 projectiles followed by 5 slower-moving projectiles.
  • 4 slow-moving projectiles angled left or right, with 4 fast-moving projectiles angled in the other direction.

Dusk's swirly projectiles will not hurt Isaac when they hit him, instead they have various effects depending of their color:

  • Black projectiles apply the Curse of Darkness effect to the room for a few seconds.
  • Purple projectiles inflict Isaac with fear for a few seconds, removing his ability to perform any actions except moving.
  • White projectiles slow Isaac's movement speed down a few seconds.

After the head has finished shooting projectiles, it will be followed by Dusk's hands each performing their own attacks. Each hand will perform an attack individually selected randomly from the following:

  • Fingers curl inwards, then releases 8 large Continuum.png Continuum projectiles in the cardinal and ordinal directions that travel quickly and have very long range.
  • Holds a fist out above Isaac's position before slamming down twice in a row, creating a ring of rock waves with each impact.
  • Forms into a finger-gun and tries to line up with Isaac to shoot 3 red bone projectiles in a wide spread pattern, repeated 3 times.
  • Closes into a fist and charges up for a moment before punching horizontally across the room.

The hands will perform two sets of these attacks before clapping together towards Isaac's position.

After Dusk's hands perform their first set of attacks, Dusk has a chance to laugh and summon an innumerable number of ghostly skulls known as Fog of War. These skulls appear from the top of the screen and fall towards the bottom, being unable to hurt Isaac and only serving to block the view of the room similar to Mistmonger.png Mistmonger. During this, the hands will continue to perform their second set of individual attacks before clapping together; the Fog of War will disappear after the hands have performed the clap.

Finally, after the hands had finished clapping together, Dusk will fire swirly projectiles from its head as the cycle repeats itself. For all future cycles after the first one, Dusk's head will spit two different spreads of swirly projectiles consecutively instead of once.

Phase 2

Once below half of its HP, Dusk will disappear and re-appear elsewhere in the room with only its head remaining. Dusk will cycle through each of the following attacks for the remainder of the fight:

  • Appears to a random side of the room, lining up with Isaac and then shoots a spread of 5 spiked swirly projectiles spread towards him.
    • These projectiles behave nearly identically to those in the first phase and apply the same effects on hitting Isaac, but will also now hurt him for half a heart.
    • Dusk will always perform this attack first in a cycle.
  • Spawns a mass of silhouettes of itself around the room, which are harmless — acting as distractions while the real Dusk re-appears among them who then charges at Isaac to bite him.
    • The location where the real Dusk appears in is indicated by a subtle "pulse" effect on the screen.
  • Appears next to Isaac along with 3 other decoys with different eye colors. Dusk and its decoys will begin to laugh while they spin wildly around Isaac, gradually expanding outwards. If this attack is not interrupted within a span of a few seconds, each copy will halt while aligned in Isaac's cardinal directions before the real Dusk shoots a spread of 5 high-velocity Continuum projectiles towards Isaac.
    • If Isaac shoots at a decoy, the group immediately assumes their cardinal positions and Dusk will proceed to shoot the projectiles.
    • If Isaac shoots the real Dusk before he can line up to shoot projectiles, the attack is aborted and Dusk will be dazed for a moment.

On death, Dusk will emit a baleful cry and darken the room for a few seconds as it fades away into smoke.

Notes

  • The swirly projectiles will apply their effects on hit even when Isaac is invincible.
  • The Continuum projectiles in both phases deal a full heart of damage.
  • If Dusk's hands hit Dusk's own head after charging up a punch, it will deal 2.5% of Dusk's maximum HP (~17.7 HP) in self-damage and causing its head to be stunned for a moment.
  • Entering Dusk's boss room or encountering it in a Boss Challenge Room will teleport Isaac to the bottom center of the room, similarly to Gurdy.png Gurdy.
